I thank God for your family program. We couldn’t make our daughter get out of bed, go to school, or choose better friends. We were overwhelmed.
We met with a therapist who recommended your program. We knew nothing about addiction before our daughter was admitted to Insight. I was devastated when I learned that Anna was using heroin. I thought only the low life used heroin. She was raised in an upper middle class neighborhood by decent parents. How could this have happened? I felt like a failure.
From the first day she was admitted we knew we made the right decision. The admission staff spent a lot of time easing our fears and answering our questions. In the family program we learned a great deal about addiction and how it impacts the entire family. What a relief it was to learn that we did not cause her drug use, we can't control it, and we can't cure it. Her therapist worked with us and taught us how to handle early recovery and, God forbid, relapse. We learned we are only responsible for our own actions and and the best way to give understanding and encouragement to the addict is by allowing them the dignity to accept responsibility for their own actions. Along with the educational part, the family group put us in touch with other families and their struggles. Talking with other families helped to give us strength and encouragement. Anna's therapist also explained to us how the Al-Anon program works. That program has been a blessing.
Anna is now in college, getting good grades, and going to meetings. My husband and I are attending Al-Anon and therapy. Thank you for giving us our daughter back. We would recommend Insight to anyone who is struggling with addiction.
